Curriculum Development
Aims:
1. To develop an ever-improving capability to use English:
2. To think and communicate;
3. To acquire, develop and apply knowledge;
4. To respond and give expression to experience;
5. To develop and apply an ever-increasing understanding of how language is organized, used and learned.
Our School-based Curriculum:
1. Phonics:
Phonics is one method teaching children how to read. It is the skill of changing letters into sounds. With the school based phonics teaching, pupils start from primary one are able to apply the learnt skill in recognizing individual sounds in a word and they learn to use letter / sound relationships to form words and are able to recognize words by the end of key stage one.
2. Reading:
The aim is to teach reading strategies and promote reading in order to improve students' English language proficiency.
For P.1 and P.2, a double lesson is allocated for the reading programme every week and it is conducted by our NET and local teachers. Teaching strategies are big book shared reading, story telling and guided reading. Language arts, phonics and high frequency words are introduced. Students are given readers for home reading.
For P.3 to P.6, teachers choose various text types for teaching reading. Different questioning techniques are used in order to promote pupils' critical thinking while reading.
Our school promotes reading across the curriculum in P.2, P.4 and P.5, students can broaden their horizon and develop interest in reading different genres.
3. Writing:
English teachers design school based writing packages for each level. Pupils will experience different writing processes and learning activities before their productions.
4. Speaking:
1. To enhance speaking ability and confidence, P.3&P.6 have small group speaking training with NETs and SETs every week. Students will experience picture description, presentation and experience sharing in speaking lessons.
2. P.4&P.5 conduct speaking training during the period of Vivid Learning Zone in afternoon section.
5. General English Programme:
Different learning tasks and activities are used to develop the four language skills of our students.
6. CEO:
Our school has joined the programme of CEO to promote self-directed learning and the core values of catholic education. Students can learn about different core values through interesting reading passages. Pupils are encouraged to use the platform for self-studying.
7. Others:
Cambridge Young Learners English Tests and courses are provided for P.5 and 6 students.
Library skills are provided for P.1-6 pupils
Drama Club is organized for P.3-6 pupils
